EvacuationΩ Those who have been following Peter Allison’s quest to climb Trifecta Middle will be saddened to hear about what Pete describes as “the best and worst bouldering day of my life”. After driving all night on Friday from Wanaka to Christchurch (again), and then waiting for a break in the weather all weekend, Pete got his chance to send last night. For the first time, Pete made it through the crux pull to the lip. Then, in his words (via text this morning at 6.21am):

[I] matched, cut, put L foot on, came in R hand, L hand again to jug, wet, ping, snapped R tibia and fibula in half, waited 3 hours in PAIN for chopper. No tri mid til 2010.

Pete went under the knife this morning, and should (by now) be sporting some new metal body parts. Bad luck fella, get well soon! Ω

I wonder if this could be the bottom part of Pete’s leg? Perhaps it fell off while he was being winched into the chopper, rolled into Cave Stream, washed out to sea, was sucked backwards through Cook Strait and then floated to Phillip Island?

And this guy fell way further than Pete and didn’t even break a leg!

Pete has always operated on a ‘No pain, no gain’ approach. He could be real strong by the time he walks again!

I wish you a full and speedy recovery, Pete.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone considered that a broken leg-less ascent of Middle Trifecta wouldn’t have been rad enough for the Radness? Just an idea… Perhaps you might want to keep an eye out for someone crawling up to Flock Hill and trying to campus that boulder problem?

  5. Gomez says:

    Word.

  6. Krispy says:

Hope the recovery goes well Pete. Thats one way to make climbing history. Just for the record books who were the spotters?

  7. S.A.M says:

Pete: Rad to the point of breakage. Get well soon son.

  8. B Dogg says:

Lets get that recovery going Pete, lets hope your walking further than the 2 feet today you managed. Krispy I was there filming and the spotters would not have stopped this accident, It was just unlucky with how Pete landed.

  9. Buff says:

I was spotting Krispy. Everyone else was moving the pads over. Pete came off the very last move. He couldn’t have fell from any higher. He fell thrutching for the last move and flew thew the air sideways. I shoved him away from the rock and onto the pad, but I couldn’t upright him and he landed on the mats (just barely) which were sloping on another angle. The rest, you know.

Yo team! Thanks heaps for all your kind words and support, was rad to see so many of you come visit. As some of you know I was released back into the wild today, heading back to Wellington with the folks tomorrow for some home cooking and chinups - Tri Mid may be off until next year but I’ve still got a Hueco trip to train for! Pics and vids soon to come for your [sadistic] viewing pleasure. Cher!

  11. Ryan says:

That’s ROUGH, Micro! Seriously gutted for ya. Get well soon, and I’ll see ya on North Mountain in December.

  12. Jen says:

That sucks, I pretty much did the same thing bouldering. 19 months, 7 surgeries later, am still crippled, no more bouldering for me! Hope you will heal better than me mate!
